No nhs pension after 9 years nursing?

Hi, my mum was an nhs nurse for around 9 years, from 1973 to 1982.
I'm puzzled as she retired from self employment at the age of 66 in 2022. She now recieves the full state pension for her years worked, but there's nothing extra for being in the NHS, which doesn't sound correct to me.
Thanks for any advice!

Has she claimed it from the NHS pension scheme?

Your mother is sure that she was a member of the NHS pension scheme?

Was she given a statement of deferred benefits when she left?

Has she checked with the administrator of the NHS pension scheme? See

She's not done anything to claim it (thinking it would be automatic), she did say she used to get a mention of it on a letter at some point but it was 20 to 30 years ago since she last saw mention of it she thinks, so we'll definitely have a look at those links thank you!

It is normally the case that a pension needs to be claimed.

How would they have otherwise known she had retired? In all likelihood her pension would have been payable since she was 60. She is unlikely to get back any unpaid pension but she will benefit from it having been deferred for 6 years. Make sure she gets on and claims it now

Assuming that she is a deferred member of the pension scheme for the period stated, the pension would have been payable at 60 (or even before under certain circumstances).

    And re arrears of pension

If you’ve not worked in the NHS since your NPA, your pension will be backdated to your NPA. You’ll receive a mandatory taxable back payment of your pension benefits. You cannot choose the date your back payment of benefits will be paid into your account.

First and foremost, you need confirmation that she joined the pension scheme and continued as a member until she left.

As others have commented it needs to be claimed and isn't automatic but she may have deferred status. Has she got any old payslips which might have an SD number (pension number)? Definitely get her to give NHS pensions a call (it can take a while to get through to speak to someone so call early morning).

There is also a Govt website to trace old lost pensions.
    Good luck

Did she work full time for the NHS during that period?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
