Yes That was it.  I gave up reading tea leaves decades ago.

I just wasn't used to a pension going down.  Still I suppose the state pension makes up for it.

Yes, it was a shock when I received a letter saying my Company Pension was going to reduce . I contacted some of my ex work colleagues who are also just about to get a State Pension and they said their Company Pensions were also reducing by about 3.5k a year. They had worked for the company many more years than me while I took early retirement and voluntary redundancy.

I was unaware of this agreement that the Company made with the unions about opting back into SERPS but where they were willing to pay the additional NI contributions on behalf of employees until they reached State Pension age .  The agreement was that if the State Pension worked out to be more than some theoretical figure , they would recoup that surplus by reducing the Company Pension.
