Hi MSE,

As part of a work initiative I need to buy a present for a 17 year boy who otherwise wouldn't have anything to open on Christmas morning. He has asked for a watch. I've got no idea what sort of watch a 17 year old boy would like, what is popular etc.

I'd be very grateful if any of you with teenage boys can what sort of what he might like! The suggested budget is around £20.

Thanks!  :)

  • I think you should ask him we have no idea based on th3 little info you have given us. One 17 year old might want something high tech like an Apple Watch another might want a retro mechanical watch.

You won't get anything too techy for £20 so I'd go for something basic like a nice Timex type watch assuming those are still made.

Something like a fit bit band with a watch will be at least £50 (last time I looked).  Trendier but maybe too far outside the budget.

Then again - if you look in Aldi Lidl there may be something mid aisle that would be good but not too pricey.

I can't ask him. A charity has given us each a present tag and asked us to buy the present on it. The only information I have is that it's for a 17 year old boy and that he would like a watch.

Appreciate that not everyone will want the same thing but if there's a particular brand/type of watch that's popular with teenage boys that would be a starting point.

Brilliant, thank you. £20 isn't a set budget so I'm happy to go a little above it

Argos have 32 men's watches priced between £15 and £20. For someone who has nothing. Any watch will be a prized possession. There's some decent looking digital watches I would say.

I would go for a classic Casio digital watch.  They're having something of a resurgence in terms of fashion, and they're great quality so should last him.

A few Casio styles are available for around £20 and if you're willing to push the budget up there's probably more choice. I'd personally go for a metal one over a plastic option. Argos have a couple of those in budget.

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2775591 - £16.99 (this would probably be my top pick)

    https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9106967 - £19.99

If you're willing to stretch, there's a gold coloured version of the first one, but it's £34.99

In 1984 I bought this one

It has stayed available through the years and now is classed as 'retro'

I'd buy something like this: Men’s Sekonda 43mm Wingman Pilot Type Watch With Date Window Nylon Strap | eBay

I've bought a very similar one from Sekonda and found them to be very robust. I used mine when sailing. It's waterproof to 50m, and the fabric stap is very comfortable and won't irritate the skin like some resin straps.

It should come in quite a nice presentation case as well.
