Quite easily, I think is the answer

Horror stories aside, the phrase that stuck out to me was "Checkatrade denied the allegations and said it had removed 1,000 substandard traders in the past 12 months."

I don't care how many members you have, if you're *removing* 1,000 of them in a year for being substandard, then your due diligence is not fit for purpose.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I had a plasterer from checkatrade and they were super tidy as the reviews said, but they left cracks in the plaster, plus holes and blobs of plaster where the geometry was a bit more complicated (where the wall met the door frame for example, but not at a difficult access point). It wasn't a hot day, the guy was often sitting waiting for the plaster to dry, so there wasn't any reason for cracks. So even disregarding rogue traders, I'm not convinced that these sites provide reassurance of a good job.

For free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. Beware fee charging companies with similar names.

I guess the same way Trustpilot still rakes in the businesses and people believe everything they are told.

Well, I can sign up today.
It will cost me £30 per month, but two months free plus a £200 Amazon Gift Card on listing.  That's a net of only £100 for the first year.
If I sign up today, there is a 12-question vetting process which I complete and will be vetted and "live" within 24-hours.

So, what service do you need and what part of the country?
I could be the best whatever you need wherever you need it by tomorrow.  That £100 outlay will be less than the first stage payment for whatever job you need doing.
    Happy Days :)
