curry's repair

i took my son's gaming laptop to curry's to have the space bar repaired as it came off and would not clip back on, i have a care and repair plan but was told it does not cover external issues, so i paid £50 to have the laptop sent to curry' tech team and was told there would be additional charges for parts and i will be contacted with a price, a lady from the tech team called me and told me the space bar can be repaired but the other key are a little soft from spillage (about 6 months ago my son opened a can of pop and a little came out and landed on the keys that is the only spillage that has ever happened) but everything is working ok would i like to pay £85 for a new keyboard or just have to space bar repaired at no extra cost, i told the lady as long as everything was working ok i would just like the space bar fixed please, then a week after that i get a text message asking for me to call tech team so i did only to be told the motherboard is not working and it would cost over £800 to fix it, there was nothing wrong with the laptop when i took it in to curry's and as i do not have over £800 to fix it they are sending it back in a worse state then what it was when i gave it to them, please any advice on this would be great i feel sick and so upset that curry's has done this, i want to cry

Surely they should fix this internal issue under your plan?
  • Apparently the care and repair plan dose not cover accidental damage like spillage, all I wanted was a space bar fixed the laptop was working great before i took it in, when I collect it it will not be able to turn on without a motherboard that works, and my son will not be able to do homework, there must be something I can do as it was fine before Currys got their hands on it

Unfortunately spillages are a nightmare, and don't materialise instantly.

....and it is just coincidence that it materialised 6 months later just after it was in curry's for repair ??? Possible but a photo from currys of the alleged damage would have  been useful!

    Firstly know your rights!

Get hold of the care and repair plan and understand the terms and conditions to see if you have a claim plus if you have it see if you have a  insurance policy that covers accidental damage in case you cannot get satisfaction from currys.

If it was me I would raise  a formal complaint in writing and follow it up with Tele call or online chat- contact details at https://www.currys.co.uk/help-and-support.html#contact

Emphasise that the laptop was given to currys for repair to the space bar at a given price and was otherwise working ( hopefully you have some evidence of that? Written quote or verbal quote and information given to you at repair time  before the motherboard issue )
Detail in the written complaint what you were promised and  that evidence in chronological order and then also what you want as  resolution.

Reiterate all that in your follow-on  call or online chat and do not be fobbed off. Just be factual and assertive but not aggressive.

If all that fails get in touch with  newspapers help service to fight your corner. They can often get better results!

For future reference it should also be learning process that it is not  a good idea to have drinks near laptops and mix a necessary computer for homework with gaming. We have all probably been in similar situations where we learn and it would have been  a good idea to use   an external usb keyboard ( cheap, easily replaced) after potential gaming use as they can get hammered  a bit and also better to use.

If all fails get a cheap refurbished laptop for the homework. A lot less costly than £800.

Once Currys quote you to repair the keyboard and you agreed to go ahead, that formed the contract.

Service providers must carry out their services with reasonable care and skill. If the motherboard failure occurred while the laptop was in Currys’ care, they may be liable for the damage unless they can prove it was unrelated to their actions. Currys would need to demonstrate that the motherboard issue was pre-existing and unrelated to their handling.

You should argue that their handling caused the new problem and they've failed in their duty of care under the Consumer Rights Act 2015
