Someone told me a while back that they claimed a VAT refund on some work they did on their house, for materials ,etc. Does anyone know anything about this and wheer to apply?

if they were VAT registered and the property was for residential use then it is possible VAT would be reclaimed.
as far as I am aware only new build houses are automatically VAT exempt."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0 -
just a hunch, but watch out if you are doing it up to sell. could you be liable for some kind of gains tax in this instance? Hope not, but if so, might be best to claim/pay neither!
