So im in a panic, i was paying a nominal £1 per month towards my debts as im on universal credit and currently have medical issues and barely scrape by each month, step change said they cannot continue the nominal payment and cancelled my plan, but in their faqs they only do this if payments are missed which there was not. on top of my medical issues im diagnosed with CPTSD and seriously struggle on a daily basis carrying out tasks and get over whelmed, who can i turn to as im going to need help and im fearful of the debt collection bullying thats going to start.

  • OK More details needed, do you qualify for a DRO?

Step change are correct since your only income is benefits.

We need more details, as in what you owe to whom.

And it may well be that with your financial and health issues write offs on health grounds are more appropriate. If you don't want to do that, it's also possible that a DRO would be possible.

BTW someone I know who will not work again and had a large debt with one provider had it written off when family explained the situation. We were all a bit stunned.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Moved this from the bankruptcy board.

Token payments are only ever a stop gap strategy, but if you want to continue making them, just pay them yourself.

However if your on a benefits only income, I would suggest writing to your creditors and telling them payments are unaffordable due to you not working and ask them to stop collection activity.

They won`t normally pursue debts they have no hope of collecting on.

It may be worth asking for a write-off on medical grounds if you can get a mental health professional to complete a DMHEF form for you because of the CPTSD.

    Hi,

I’m sorry to hear about how you’re feeling.

I just want to explain that if you were making £1 payments to your debts though StepChange, this would be a Token Payment Plan (TPP). This is a temporary solution that we offer until your situation improves, for up to 12 months.

Towards the end of the 12 months or when a change was expected, you should have received a message asking you to get back in touch with us to update your budget and review your long-term options.

In any case, we can still help you. I’d recommend giving our Review team a call. They will be able to discuss other debt solutions and give further advice.

    Regards,

    Aidan
