Childcare Nursery Fees Over Christmas

Hello,

My childcare setting charges for Bank Holidays @ full rate, these arent included within 30 free hours I receive. I am fine with this. But the setting is closed over Christmas for 1.5 weeks but she is charging us FULL rate for the 3 x bank holidays over Christmas/New Year. Please tell me this is wrong???

Definitely wrong. I wouldn't be paying if the nursery is closed
  • I'll avoid right / wrong. This is standard practice.

Salaried employees are paid the same for Feb (28 days) as March (31 days). Salaried employees are not paid less for months with bank holidays.

This is a contract for services, and if you are like me, you've agreed to a contract for a uniform monthly payment. Their argument will be something akin to 'we calculate the running costs for the entire year, after adjusting for bank holidays etc and divide by 12 months to provide consistent billing'

The other annoying one is inset days. There are likely 4-5 of these where they will be closed on a Friday. Some nurseries may close a week over Christmas, mine does not.

Depends on what viewpoint you take.  You could argue that it is wrong on the basis that the service is not available / being used.  However, the business still has its overheads.  Therefore, if they did not charge for this period, the weekly charge for when the childcare business is open would be higher to cover bank holiday periods.  One way or another a business has to balance the books and the overall amount you will pay is likely to be pretty much the same no matter how they break that down.  .
