Debt collector contact GDPE

I’ve been reading loads of posts on here and have all been really helpful so first thing today is a huge thank you to all the contributors.

I have a lot of personal debt, and following advice on here I will start a DMP once I’ve got defaults from creditors, I’m feeling ok about all that and in control.

Specific question though is, I have a large negative balance on PayPal since September. I have had a few emails from them and phone calls which I have ignored but recently received a letter on email and in the post from Moorgroup saying they are collecting on behalf of PayPal and to set up payment etc etc. Again, I’m quite happy to leave this until further action is taken but I don’t want them turning up at my house so want to try and head it off before it happens.
If I respond to their email stating my rights under GDPR to choose how I want to be contact and and aam them to only contact me through email would that be accepted by them? I don’t actually mind the postal letters tbf but email seems easier just want to eliminate the threat of a home visit.

Thoughts/ advise massively appreciated.

    It would take some considerable amount of time before anyone comes knocking.  And that would only be after a CCJ for it to be legit. 

    The issue with many debt collectors is that they try to frighten you in to making payments that may not be necessary and may exceed what is actually affordable.  Should any of them send someone round (very unlikely) they have as much right to enter your house as the milkman.  So don't let them in even if it's a full blown gale and they need the loo.  (they'll say anything....)

    Frankly I would stick to receiving things by post and not give them any easy ways to contact you.  Don't ring, text or email.  I know it's so easy these days to pop a quick email off to someone but that gives them details they don't need really.

  • Thank you for your response. They have already emailed me as well as sent snail mail letter. Should I just ignore both them and just ride it out for now?

    Brie is referring to bailiffs visits, I think you are more concerned about doorstep collection agents or debt collectors.

    Is it Moorcroft who have written to you?

    They collect on behalf of PayPal, but to the best of my knowledge don`t use doorstep collectors, they operate from a call centre like 95% of debt collectors do.

    Legal action can only be taken by a debts owner, and only once defaulted, Moorcroft are just a collection company engaged to collect your arrears, all you`ll get is a few letters, maybe a call or two, nothing to get in a sweat over.

    Eventually PayPal will default you, and likely engage Moorcroft again to collect the debt, however we have seen evidence that they now sell there bad debts, so its a game of wait and see.

    Yes thats right, doorstep collectors. Moorcroft have just written to me by email and in the post, just one letter so far.

    I’m not worried about letters, defaults etc but I really don’t want them turning up at my house. Hopefully it won’t come to that from what you’ve said. I’ll ignore everything for now until the defaults arrive.

    I'm sorry for commenting on your posts, but I was wondering if you've had any issues with PayPal? 
    I have a large negative balance on my PayPal and was told to make regular payments when I could to PayPal. Eventually they instructed Moorcroft to collect on their behalf. As far as I'm aware, this is still the case as I've heard nothing since. I have been making payments via the Moorcroft account. Was just wondering how you got on 6 months later?

    I haven’t had an issue with PayPal at all once it moved over to Moorcroft, offered a payment plan which was accepted and that just gets paid through standing order every month. I do also have a PayPal credit account as well though and they haven’t handed that over to Moorcroft, instead I have to call them every month to make a payment due to the negative balance not allowing me to make regular online payments. Other than that being a faff they’ve been completely fine.
