Why do media keep talking about WFP being £300 when everybody I know has been told it's £200

For the millionth time this morning's GNB referred to the loss of the £300 Winter Fuel Payment by those not on Pension Credit.

I am on Pension Credit by the letter informing me that I qualify says I will receive £200 at some arbitrary date "in November or December".

I've seen other posts that indicate this is the actual amount everybody is getting.

So why do the media (including Martin) keep exaggerating the amount of the Winter Fuel Payment?

  • It's £300 if you were born before 23 September 1944, £200 otherwise.

People pick the amount that best suits their POV in any discussion.
  • The last 2 years it was increased to £300 to help with the cost of living..but generally it's £200

It wasn’t. The last two years also included an extra £300 for cost of living which made a total of £500 (if under 80) or £600 (if 80 and over).

    It’s normally £200 for under 80 and £300 for over 80.

And IMO those over 80 probably need it more even if not on PC.

Since the Government must have the record to determine over / under 80 qualification, you do wonder why it was a blanket removal, rather than (perhaps) only from those under 80 not qualifying for (receiving) PC

  • I am 73 now.  Widowed (2011).  I got £300.  I paid for wood for my wood burning stove.  It was a luxury and not a necessity.

    I haven't checkedhow long I got £300.
  • NI are giving all OAPs not receiving the £200/£300 a once off for this year £100. That would at least help budget for next year, unlike the removal with no time to budget for this year.
