MSE Poll: Have you haggled with Sky, BT, the AA or any others this year? Did you succeed?

Haggling can result in big savings – on anything from digital TV and broadband to breakdown cover and car insurance. Each year we try to gauge the success rates of those who have done it. So whether you've got cheaper prices, extra goods or better deals, please let us know how successful you've been in this week's poll.

Let us know.

  • I had success with Hastings direct car insurance and as a bonus I didn't have to talk to anyone. There's a feature on their website where you can view your renewal. If the price isn't competitive then enter a rival quote and the computer decides whether it can match it. Saved over £200 this year(on renewal price) and £50 the year before. This has kept my insurance prices at about the same year on year without the bother of changing insurer and proofing my NCD.
  • If you are with the RAC/AA, do not automatically renew. My RAC renewal came up as £174 (that is for everything, home start, recovery etc.) I looked up some competitors, e.g. Auto Aid and got a price for a similar package -- £129. I had no intention of going with them. Phoned the RAC to cancel. Gave them my figures (you have to be convincing) and said I wanted to cancel. Bingo! Full RAC cover for two people/cars (everything apart from lost keys) for £110. Result!

I have always haggled with Sky, but they have not been giving as good offers at the last 2 renewals when going through to 'Retentions'. However, for those last two renewals I have actually 'left' when the offer was not good enough. Remember that there is a 30 day period before the service is actually cancelled, and although it may seem scary to actually start the leaving process, I have always been contacted by them within 3 days with a much improved offer (in both cases less than I was already paying - remembering there is an annual inflation increase baked into the deal). I am paying the same price today as I was 4 years ago

O2 are pushing up all the prices yet again. Including mine. Phoned for a better deal, using the latest Lebara offers as a comparator.  CS said they couldn't get anywhere near them, so they've now lost me altogether - and the wife. Switched to Lebara, which I wouldn't have bothered to do had they left the price alone.
    Infinitely better deal too.
