National Insurance History Incorrect

Options
My husbands NI contribution history is incorrect. He has worked all of his life, mainly self employed and for the past ten years CIS. When checking his NI history on Government Gateway a couple of years ago it showed a number of recent years not full and the cost of filling gaps. I contacted the accountant who said no need to fill gaps as HMRC records were incorrect and that he'd contact them. I then checked early this year to find all years not full. My husband retires in three years I would therefore like to know how to obtain the full records of his NI history since the accountant has still not received a reply.

  • How did he pay his Class 2 NI?

Class 4 doesn't count for State Pension purposes.

I believe he must have worked approx 20 years in employment having tax and NI deducted then switched to self employment. I have been unable to find paperwork verifying NI and tax payments so far apart from the years in company employment which is why i would like full records from HMRC. Since previously most years were marked full from years ago then recently marked as not full the HMRC must have the full payment information to have updated unless it was a glitch in the system.

Your husband can make a subject access request to HMRC who will then send you everything they have, the full history.

I thought there was a good thread on it on here but I'm struggling to find it.
  • When viewing the NI record on line, where you can see it says full year or not full etc, you should be able to expand each year. I think it says see details or something like that.
Then at least you can see how much NI was paid for each year.

What years are missing? Up until 2014-15 Class 2 needed to be paid direct to HMRC, did your husband do this?. From 2015-16 it was collected via Self Assessment

And for some people it all went pear-shaped from 2015/16 as they ended up (not sure who was at fault or whether it varied) not being registered as self-employed for NIC, even though they were for Income Tax and submitted their SA return with the Class 2 declared.  HMRC's systems then unwound that and reduced the amount due by the Class 2.  A friend of mine was in this position and did not notice that small £150ish reduction.

They got it sorted, once we had figured out what was happening but it seems the problem was quite widespread.

Thank you everyone for your help. I will send a SAR which should hopefully explain the not full years as expanding each year gives no explanation. I have this afternoon found a couple of recent HMRC which state classes 4 and 2 were paid though those years have been marked not full.
