Adapting curtains

Dies anyone know anything about this arrangement for hanging curtains. My daughter has ‘inherited’ it in her new home. She has some eyelet curtains she would like to have adapted for this window, but I’m at a bit of a loss and to advise her about the type of heading tape to attach and how to actually hang them (other than from what I can  glean from her photos, which is guesswork.
). Has anyone actually used this system, please?

  • It looks like tab tops on a pole hidden behind coving. Shed need to take photos of the curtain tops to be sure

I think the white things are clips holding a normal curtain which is made to size by a heading tape. You can see the stitching of the tape.
If there is enough length in the ones she wants to use - I would trim off the eyelet top of the curtain and attach a wide heading tape to clip on to the hanging rod.
I would think that just threading the eyelet curtains onto the existing rod wouldn't work as you would probably be able to see the eyelets hanging below the coving.
I don't think the space above the rod looks wide enough to do tape and normal curtain hooks.

Are the white plastic clips on a track or a pole?

Any curtain might be switched into the plastic clips. To make it hang properly it would be better to have a gathered curtain tape of the right sort. The current one has "pencil pleats" rather than a general gather.

If the replacement curtain is long enough, cut off the eyelets as previously described, sew on the tape, and attach to the clips. If not try cliping it up as-is and see how it looks.

Yes, as @Florenceem says, I think the curtains have a tape that gives them the pleats and then clip on curtain hooks. The rings are attached/integral
to the runners inside the rail.

You'd lose a fair bit of length from curtains if you cut off the eyelet part and then add tape. Personally, I like floor length curtains so I wouldn't do that.

It's hard to tell from the photo but is the coving at ceiling height or is there some wall above it ?  If it's right to the ceiling, then it's going to be difficult to attach a suitable pole for eyelet curtains even if you replaced the existing rail as it looks as if the window goes right up to the ceiling. 🤔

  • You guys have better eyes than me! Now.youve said it I can see the clips

Thanks for comments. The previous owner was Polish and said it was a commonly used Polish system. Any Polish people reading? 😉 The pegs/clips are in a track.

My daughter’s  in another part of the country, so I can only go back photos and this stuff isn’t her forte!

There’s enough length on the eyelet curtains to cut off the top. I just feel that if the tape is too deep, the line of stitching will show beneath the pelmet. I’m thinking of maybe inch and a half depth tape and try and clip up the same way these are done initially.

If I was there I’d play about with it. She’s impatient to get it done, I’m trying to get her to slow done and think it through!

Bronnie - yes go for a narrower tape.

Can she just not live with the existing curtains for now and check with changing to her own once it situ?
My thought is just that once you chop the curtains and it's wrong the deed is done!!

if her own curtains are patterned lines of stitching won't be that noticeable- the pencil pleats look elegant, they hang nicely. Narrower tape definitely means gathers, personally I'd choose the pleats. (Yes, I realise that's only my opinion!)
The existing curtains have tape sewing lines but I suspect you don't see them unless you are peering closely.
