Delay on an earlier train. Can I claim?

My original train was ticketed to leave Euston at 15:50, but I was early enough to be able to get on the 13:50 instead. The 13:50 ended up running 20 minutes late so technically I was delayed even though I arrived at my destination earlier than planned. Am I able to claim as the train I was on was delayed?

Yes, so long as your ticket was valid for travel on the train that you actually took.

The ticket was an advanced single issued by cross country using Avanti west coast. Unfortunately cross country system needs minimum 30 minutes delay and I was 20 minutes extra on the train so no claim this time0

How did you get through ticket checks with what appears to be an invalid ticket for that service? If you did think yourself fortunate you didn't end up with a penalty fare.
Also remember any delay repay claim is against the train operating company (Avanti) and not the seller (Cross country).1
