using shampoo as soap

I have a glut of shampoo in the house. Would it be ok to use it as liquid hand soap? One of my sons has very sore hands due to not rinsing/drying them properly when he washes them. Would it be too strong?

    I have used washing up liquid before,but if your son has sore hands maybe he has a reaction to the soap you use. maybe a milder one is needed for him
  • I've used bubble bath as handwash and washing up liquid watered down, but my skin is very sensitive so I had to stop using that. You could experiment and water down the shampoo. Maybe the rest of the family could use it as handwash. If your son is prone to eczema and/or dry skin try aqueous cream as a substitute for soap. That's what I use as my hands get sore and I get a large tub -500g - for under £2.00 at my local pharmacy.
  • Hi
    Is your son drying his hands thoroughly. If you don't they can get really sore. Have used shampoo in the past and also bubble bath.

    We always buy those ultra big bottles of shampoo from Lidl to use as wandwash, wouldn't think of doing anything else. My DH had fairly sensitive skin and it's OK for him.

  • Thanks - it has become apparent recently that he is not drying them properly and that is contributing to the problem. (he is 8) We are monitoring the handwashing/drying over the school holidays and making him put cream on but he doesn't like it!

    Just wondered about using the shampoo up as we get through loads of soap .

  • When I found out that my DS was in the habit of putting sooo much bubble bath in I changed to Sainsbury's basics shampoo (27p?) for a big bottle. I also use it as shower gel if nothing else is available. There has been no adverse reaction apart from me being a lot calmer about his bathtimes!

    I have a job where I have to wash my hand frequently (I've even been sent on a Local Authority Course to learn how to do it properly:rolleyes::D) Not drying hands will make them chapped but also over vigorous towel rubbing will chap them. Encourage you son to pat his hands dry rather than rub and apply cream at night before bed if he balks at using it during the day. HTH

  • Shampoo is designed to be mild as it is prone to going in your eyes when washing your hair, I actually use a mild shampoo as a body wash as I have sensitive skin and it is more gentle than any of the shower gels/soaps I have tried.
  • I use cheap shampoo in handwash containers all the time. I sometimes do get get cracks in one hand but found I was not rinsing or drying left hand properly, made sure i washed all the liquid off and no more problems.
