Returning to UK after 9 years, will my old debt be a problem?

Options
I left the UK 9 years ago owing around 30K for credit cards/loans and am looking at returning. I never actually received any CCJs but am aware that they could have been delivered in my absence, so I'm unsure of my current 'financial status' in UK

I have tried an online search but it only covers the addresses for the last 5/6 years and I've been here for 9 years.

I'm not concerned about getting credit again and dont own anything of any value car/house etc. However I am concerned that future inheritance could be at risk.

I was also looking at having my name included on house deeds, again concerned at how risky that is?

If the debts are all that old and you made no payments then the debts are no longer recoverable, they are statute barred. The only exception would be some debts owed to the government (for Council Tax, to HMRC, student loans etc).

The slight complication was that say you owed Bank X money, opening an account and depositing money in it would likely cause problems, so best to go with a different banking group.

Given you have something to leave as inheritance then presumably you'll be using part of that to clear the debts you owe?

Once a CCJ has been obtained the creditor gets a further 6 years to enforce the debt, after that they'd need to go back to court to have permission to continue chasing it but if you've been hiding abroad and have now reappeared in the UK a judge may be minded to grant permission.

Thanks for response...it's actually for inheritance that I will be due to receive.
