  • You’ve accumulated significant amounts in pension pots and savings. You have some, but limited, index-linked pension provision in the form of your wife’s LGPS pensions and state pensions.

If you’re both now retired, it’s time to spend some of your pension pots - otherwise why accumulate them?

You could consider whether your house will allow you to remain independent into old age, and either move or improve if not. You could purchase an index linked annuity with some of your pot to give you certainty about your income and payment of a spouse’s pension. You could simply spend a bit more and gift more.

If there is good health and a reasonable expectation of living 7+ years, pass down as much as you can 👀
Treat them to things.  Take them for a fancy meal or fancy holiday so the can share in your good fortune 😎

If your offspring are decent humans, you might hope they will help with any care requirements later in your lives if you have managed to reduce your wealth, although it sounds like the house could perhaps pay for most of that (google suggests the average time in care homes is <2 years, & only around 2.5% of people need one)

Maybe spend big on future proofing your home 🤷‍♂️

Obviously do not want to give govt anything but how does one make sure of that?

Has anybody got any suggestions for me

If that's your overriding goal, the best thing you can do is to set fire to all your money now. That way there's no tax to pay, and no risk of anyone you disapprove of getting hold of any of it.

Alternatively, for the pensions at least, you and your wife could both arrange to die in the next couple of years, so your kids get the lot tax free. However you'd better give them strict instructions never to spend it, so that they done end up giving the government anything in VAT etc.

However, assuming you don't want to do either of those things you are going to have to give some of it to the government to some point. So you might as well set yourself a better goal: get as much pleasure and benefit from your money as you can, even if that does involve paying more tax along the way.

Withdraw more from your pension. Go on more and more exotic holidays. Get a nicer car. Get that new kitchen installed. Give bigger birthday presents to your children. Whatever floats your boat, really. Make sure there's enough left over to pay a gardener and a cleaner when keeping the house in order starts to become a burden. Or the best possible care should you need it in later life, and a new hip as soon as your old one gives it without having to wait a couple of years for one on the NHS. Basically start looking at your wealth as something to be enjoyed, rather than a problem to be solved. You are in a fortunate position. Make the best of it.

Good advice, but not very environmentally friendly, if you are the sort who thinks about these things.
