Hi all. I now have the following slow cooker but am a complete slow cooker virgin!
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4207593/Trail/searchtext>SLOW+COOKER.htm
I plan to use it tommorrow for the first time to do stew and dumplings. I want to use it before I go back to work as I know I'll be paranoid leaving it for the first time so while I'm there will be better for me.
Now, the instructions don't give me much help but I want to know what temp should I put it on and for how long. I know for a stew the longer the better but roughly what would you advise? I was thinking about putting it on low all day then putting up to medium when I put the dumplings in. How long do dumplings need? (I'm cheating and using packet mix)
When I'm back at work it will go on about 8am as I leave for work and I get home at 5.15pm.
Thanks all and happy new year!!

Hi
I`ve got the same slow cooker and when i did stew in mine i left it on about 8 hours on low and thickened the gravy about 30 mins before the end and turned it up to high for the last bit.
I found that really hard things like swede and potatoes needed cutting up a bit smaller than if i`d used a pan but it turned out really well.
I`ve never added dumplings so cant help there i`m afraid, maybe i`ll try them sometime soon.

My experience is that dumplings take much longer than stove top or oven cooking as the stew needs to be bubbling to cook the dumplings. Lifting the lid of the slow-cooker and adding several cold dumpling makes the heat drop quickly and can take up to an hour to cook the dumplings properly.
All root vegetables (i.e. carrot, potato, swede) should be cut into even-sized pieces and put in the bottom of the pot before meat onions etc.
It's not necessary to brown meat but it does improve the flavour of the finished stew. Ditto onions, but I usually give them a zap in the microwave first!
Unlucky you having to be at work on New Years' Day.
TBH, I would leave it on low til you get in from work, then throw it all into a large saucepan (you could thicken if necessary at this point) and cook the dumplings on top of the stove. Don't forget to put the lid on. Depending on the size of the dumplings, they should be ready in 20-25 minutes.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
ps I'm not sure if you'll have time now. Maybe you could make the stew tonight before you go to bed (5 hours on high).
Leave to cool overnight in the coolest place you've got. Put in the fridge before you go to work. Reheat and make dumplings when you get in.:wave:0 -

Nooooo! I'm not at work tomorrow, just wanted to use the sc while i'm at home for the first time then when I go back to work I won't mind leaving it on all day.
I don't want to be putting it into a saucepan to cook the dumplings. I'd spill it everywhere!
I think I'll put it on low all day, whack it on high till its bubbling then put in the dumplings. I'll check them after say 40 minutes and go from there. Does that sound ok?:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
Sorry I mis-read your post, glad you don't have to be at work tomorrow.:D
Yes that sounds fine. (I usually ladle the stew into the saucepan, I'd make a dreadful mess otherwise!).
Just make sure you put all the root veges in the bottom.
I never tasted such tender meat til I got a slow cooker. Hope all goes well for you.:wave:0 -
After yesterdays 'rice pudding welded to the side of the SC because I thought I'd guess how much rice I needed' disaster, I would always recommend using the Low setting. I will never trust myself again with High! :rotfl: And for my own future reference, the amount of rice needed was much less than I thought :rotfl:0

100g pudding rice to one litre of milk MissEyre. HTH
(+70g sugar a knob of butter and a generous grating of nutmeg)
5hrs on high is just right in my SC:wave:0 -
I did packet dumplings in my slow cooker yesterday on top of a stew; they normally take 20-25 minutes but these took nearly an hour!0

How did your first slow cooker stew/dumplings go Shelly?:wave:0

Oh don't ask!
I had my last lie in before going back to work and was up later than I really wanted to be. Hubby said to do it on med for the day instead of low but I argued it wouldn't be the way I was going to do it once at work so I didn't do itWell.....I did do the stew and dumplings, just in the oven.
I'll try and use it over the weekend...I promise
Thanks for all the advice, I do appreciate it:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0
