AQA beginner- self assessment tax

Options
I should be receiving my first payment from AQA in January. Can anyone help me with tax?
I phoned up the tax office and told them I didn't have a clue what I had to do and she sent me out a form to fill in on small earning so I don't have to pay NI. This is just a part time job and I will only be earning about £30 a month.
When do I have to do a tax return?
DO I get a pay slip or anything from AQA to prove how much I've earnt?
WHen do I have to include my earnings up to (Jan/MArch/April)?
I am completely clueless!
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I would expect that AQA will send a remittance slip with your cheque, so keep these in a safe place. You will also need to keep details of all your expenditure in relation to this income.
HMRC will issue a SA return to you soon after 5 April 08 and you need to complete this by 30 Sept if you want them to calculate your tax or 31 Jan 09 if you want to calculate your tax. You will include your income, less expenses, for Jan-Mar 08 on the SA. The tax will be payable on 31 Jan 09.
You don't send any proof of earnings with the SA, but you keep this info safe for 6 years in case HMRC decide to launch an enquiry.

Don't forget that your SA return requires details of ALL your income, so you will need to complete the employment pages if you are also employed (you mention it is a part time job). I've found that complete SA novices often assume that you do not need to include items taxed under PAYE or indeed bank interest taxed at source (everything has to go on).
Also I think you need to consider if you are going to file online or by paper return. It was proposed to move the deadline for paper returns for 2008 to 31 October (not 31 January) but I'm not totally sure if this is finally going ahead this year or not? The paperwork with the 2008 returns will clarify this. If you want to file on line make sure you go through the registration process in plenty of time so you are not left doing it at the last minute.
  • If AQA pay you direct into your bank account rather than by cheque then you don't get any remittance advice. You would need to keep the bank statement as evidence of earnings from them.

hiya - I'm a long term AQA'er and did my first tax return with them this year.

We don't get pay slips as we are self employed freelance. Keep your bank statements just in case the tax people every query the figures - it will be marked as Issuebits. You will need to include Jan/Feb/March in your first return. You'll get all the paperwork you need in a few months time.

If you register to submit the return online it will really make life a lot easier and it calculates how much you will need to pay by next January.

There is a website which can calculate how much you can 'write off' for heating etc. It's hidden away somewhere on our IBR group - if you search for 'tax' you should be able to find it.

    HTH.

Just wanted to thank you properly, Keren29 - I'm just starting with AQA and the only thing that is daunting me is the accounts side of self-employment.

When you say "our IBR group", what do you mean, incidentally? I'd forgotten about writing off expenses!

Do you do AQA full time?
