Cancelling direct debits

Hello, I am looking for advice please. I have a joint current account with my ex partner which she still has 2 of her personal loans coming out of (she is saying I should pay them as I have had the money!) she is not paying her half to the joint mortgage or joint loan so the overdraft is getting bigger each month. I have emailed her but she continues to not put enough money in. When the debts are due. Is it in my right to cancel her direct debits from the joint account?

Depends how you setup the account to start with, assuming its a joint account that only needs one party's instruction then yes, you can cancel them and she can get them setup again or use the debit card to pay etc.

Presumably an ex-girl/boyfriend rather than spouse or business partner?

Yes, you can cancel a direct debit at any time and for any reason. You MUST inform her and give her the opportunity to set up direct debits from her own account. You could even explore asking your bank to recover money already paid under the direct debit guarantee.

Of course the debt remains, as does your potential liability to repay her if you did indeed benefit from the money that she borrowed.

You need to get that joint account closed ASAP and sever any financial link to her
