hmrc issue , wrong tax code, wrong job.

Can anyone advise. Ive just noticed my pay was different this month, paying quite a lot of tax and on an emergency tax code. When looking into my hmrc online account there is an employer listed that has nothing to do with me, some painting and decorating company. A completely different name in a completely different part of the country. Panicking now, is this some kind of fraud?

The emergency tax code is 1257L, what tax code was used on your pay?

It could be fraud, it could be human error.

You need to contact HMRC (webchat and type adviser seems to work well) and as an initial step explain you are only being paid by X and you want the correct code issuing to them asap.
