Two P45s and Two problems

I worked for company 1 for a year and got a job with company 2 immediately. (My last wage from company 1 was a month after leaving). I worked at company 2 for six weeks but had to leave. Company 2 sent me a P45 immediately. I've been paying emergency tax with them. A week later - company 1 gave me theirs. I have two questions. How do I get off emergency tax / claim refund? And which P45 do I give a new employer?

The latest one, HMRC will advise them of the earlier details.  From details given you may have had an overlap of tax allowances and are currently undertaxed.  If this is the case HMRC might spread this over the rest of the tax year to avoid it all being taken at once.

It is use of the emergency tax code that probably means you have underpaid tax, not paid too much.

Not that anyone will have done anything wrong here, it's just how PAYE works.

What tax code do you think is the correct one?  Most people tend to be on the emergency tax code (1257L) anyway so when you move from one employer to another you can end up with two paydays (one from each employer) in the same tax period and receive two lots of tax code allowances.  Leaving you owing tax.

Give them P45 of the main role, probably company 1.
