I mostly shop at Ocado, I sort by ‘price per’ then work downwards from the cheapest to the first that stands out as more highly rated than the competition. Sometimes that’s their own brand or M&S. It would be a false economy for me to shop at multiple supermarkets for either quality or price as I can save more money by spending time cooking from scratch.

Mint thins from Poundland  are £1.25 for a smaller box than the ones from Tescos/Morries which are now heading to nearly £2.
I like them better than the branded ones too and find, smaller box I eat fewer :)

You have to be savey with some of the cheaper brands expecially tinned stuff. There can be more juice in the cheap ones than fruit/veg.

Also went to buy some Big Soups to find that they have dropped by 100g so no longer 'big' and still expensive. I use them for quick, all in one meals if I'm going out
I'm checking around because likewise, some of the cheaper ones have lower protein levels by some considerable amount. But we still have some of the old known brands that are good just not as sucessful at advertising/packaging as the main seller.

viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on

The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

I'm a big fan of both Aldi and Lidl.  Pretty much all of their own-brand stuff is at least on a par with the big names.  A couple which I think are better are their own-brand version of Nutella (both shops).  And my personal favourite is the Aldi own-brand malted bloomer bread - I personally reckon it beats all other own-brand and all of the big names hands-down, it's the best bar none.
But I do like both Lidl and Aldi for the more unusual items, such as German sausages for instance.  And I just love Lidl's Frikadellen, I've never seen it anywhere else.  And around Christmas they have lots of German-style stuff like Stollen and various German sweets that can be tricky to find elsewhere.

Another nod for Sains baked beans, chopped tomatoes, tomato puree - in fact most things and cereals are great except for their own brand "Shreddies" or "Krispies" in my opinion. However the bran flakes, honey nut flakes, muesli and corn flakes are great - even former cereal snob hubby agrees! The majority of our shop is own brand and we are very happy.
  • Sainsburys low salt yeast extract - cheaper than Marmite and much easier to spread on bread. Tastes the same if not better.
