Paying for gaps in national insurance

Hi everyone, I have checked my gaps in national insurance on the gov.uk website and it shows I have some outstanding that haven’t been paid in full. These were as far back as 2007. It says on the website that I can make payments covering 2006 up until the deadline in 2025 but when I go to see my payment options it says I can’t make any payments and have no options available. I will however get the full pension in 2025. I still want to pay the outstanding gaps but is it worth it if I will be getting the full pension anyway? Any help for ways I can pay this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

What do you hope to achieve by buying outstanding years 🤔

Wouldn't it be simpler to just send Rachel Reeves the money and she can choose what to spend it on?
  • I have heard that Martin Lewis said making these payments is good for extra money and can be worth it in the future

You have completely lost me.  In your original post you said this,

I will however get the full pension in 2025

So what do you expect to happen if you buy additional years 🤔

If you are getting the full amount anyway paying for the missing years is pointless. You have misunderstood Martin Lewis' comments, its only good for people who wont be getting the full pension but will get extra by purchasing the extra years.

If you’re in your mid 30s you have another 30 years to accumulate a full State pension. If the HMRC app forecasts you will get there by continuing to contribute the only reason to consider filling gaps now is if you aren’t planning to work through enough of those years.

It’s good though to consider pensions sooner rather than later. If you could be contributing more why not start a thread with your current plan of attack and see if there are suggestions on ways you could improve?
