If you sell units in an investment fund, what date is the gain (or loss) made for tax purposes?
a. The date you click the button to place the "sell" order?
b. The date the order is "filled", i.e. a buyer places their buy order on the other side of the trade
c. The settlement date when the buyer has paid and the broker deposits cash proceds in your account
Similarly if you had to determine for tax purposes the date fund units were purchased, as the buyer would it be
a. The date of the "buy" order being placed?
b. The date the order is "filled"
c. The settlement date when the broker shows the fund units are added to your portfolio.

c. The settlement date when the broker shows the fund units are added to your portfolio.HMRC doesn't care when you get the money and if it was the settlement date it would open the door to shenanigans e.g., a friendly broker could delay settlement to the next tax year.0
