Christmas bonus for pensioners.

I think it has been £10 since 1972. I wonder how much it would be if inflation was applied. Over 80s have also had an extra 25p per week from about the same date.Anybody care to work out the values today?

No, but I started work in 1974 and was paid £28 a week so I'm thinking it would be in the region of a third of a week's minimum wage now so that would be about £1450

The basic state pension then however was £6.75 which would be £77.70 in todays money whereas its actually gone to £169.50 so would argue you shouldn't complain too much0 -
Given the loss of £300. Pulling a further £10 for ALL that receive this, not just pensioners. Would not even cause a ripple in the waters.
Best keep quiet & enjoy what little it is.Life in the slow lane1 -

The £10 Christmas bonus is a joke. It’s past its 50th anniversary these days and hasn’t got bigger
. I understand when it was brought about it was enough to buy everything for a decent Christmas dinner. Wouldn’t even but a miniature turkey these days.
I strongly suspect it costs the government more than its face value to send it out.I used to work in a big London Post Office some years ago. The Christmas bonus was automatically added onto the pension/other books. One year one of our pensioners got 2 weeks with the bonus added on instead of one week. He was really worried about taking the extra money as he thought it was wrong to do so. If I hadn’t paid him the extra my accounts would have been £10 out. I phoned the relevant department and they told me to pay him the extra as the cost of ”unravelling” it would have been more than the £10. He was very pleased and the next time he came in he had bought me a small bunch of flowers to say thank you for sorting it out2 -
Inflation means the original £10 needs to be over £110. Similar to the extra 25p per week over 80 year olds get.0
