and on another topic about HMRC why would they send me a new tax coding to say I was receiving ESA (I DONT - I am retired - albeit early) and I owed them a lot of tax for current fin year - I only receive a modest occ pension and they gave me 4 days notice this was happening this week with a large deduction being made leaving me with very little. and of cse could do nothing as both HMRC and DWP offices are shut until tomorrow. Is this a scam of some sorts?

Have you signed up for a personal tax account ?
Personal tax account: sign in or set up - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
If so you should be able to see how your tax code is made up and (I think) possibly be able to correct or flag up to HMRC any errors

If HMRC have a record that you are receiving a benefit that clearly you are not, you need to tell them. I would write to them, keeping a copy of the letter. Ask them to correct the coding notice immediately .If you google hmrc complaints and send it there, they have to respond within a short time frame. however you wont get the tax back until the next time your pension is paid. you can phone them but I dont know what the waiting times are like these days plus the phones are often manned by numpties.1

Another reason to get a passport...Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0

You can use the online system to speak to an adviser. Just keep stating you want to speak to an adviser and you will be passed to one.0

Does anybody or legal entity have any regulatory control over Hmrc or are they the law unto themselves? I keep getting different sums from them on my Self assessment with the latest showing a refund for 21 October 2024 a date that is in the future?gmje said:If HMRC have a record that you are receiving a benefit that clearly you are not, you need to tell them. If it is a bank payment it takes up to 3 days to go through the banking system.
If it is a payable order, it needs to be printed, put in an envelope and await collection by RM to be delivered.0
