PC won't log on users

When I turn on my pc it gets as far as the screen with the list of users on and then won't go any further. I can highlight user names with the mouse but nothing happens when I click. I have tries starting in safe mode but it makes no difference.
Has anyone got any suggestions, please?

No. I have AVG antivirus(which I think includes anti-spware).

When it loads, I press TAB twice to get to where I type the password in.

Does it say logging on and then nothing happens? or does it says it is closing my network connections and saving my settings before going back to the Welcome screen?
