As the white lines that records your speed/distance are after the camera as you approach it, it must surely take a picture of the back of your car:confused:

Some cameras (especially around Northampton/Peterborough) are frontfacing ones and take a pic of the front of the car (without flashing).

  • There are several types of camera, some forward facing, some rear facing. Info can be found here

Doesn't sound as though you've anything to worry about though

The forward facing ones are useless if you are on a motorbike!

There are 2 main types of camera used on the UK roads
Gatso is the most common they are wider than they are tall and have 2 square/rectangular openings on the front 1 for the flash 1 for the lense. These take photos from the back of the car after the car has passed. Usually there are the markings on the road. they flash twice and take 2 photos the markingas allow them to calculate your speed.

The other camera is the Truvelo, it takes photos from the front of the car inculdeing the drivers face, it used round lense and flash openings. they use an infrared flash as to not distract the driver with the flash. these also have marks on the road 3 white lines accross the width of the lane not sure how they work but they also have a trigger for the camera under the road.

There is also the newer ones that measure your average speed over a set of cameras mainly used on motoways in road works but are used on other roads, they look like yellow CCTV cameras but have 2 IR pods on each side to allow them to work at night.

If you saw a flash infront then it didnt trigger when you went past it.
