HMRC is a massive beast with many different areas... what do you want to talk to them about? Someone giving you the VAT helpline number is going to be of no use to you if you want to discuss corporation tax.0

I never found the chat function any use, but used to be able to phone HMRC reasonably easily. Try early, even a few minutes before they say they're open!Signature removed for peace of mind0

I always have more success with the online chat than I do by telephone. The challenge is getting past the "digital assistant" but by typing in "please transfer to an adviser" a few times it usually connects to a queue, though my recent waiting times have been between 30 mins and over an hour.
Online
Ask HMRC’s digital assistant to find information about:
- PAYE
- tax codes
- claiming a tax refund
- proof of employment history
If the digital assistant cannot help you, you can ask to transfer to an HMRC adviser if they’re available.
