Tax owed

I filled out a P87 form to reclaim my tax back and ticked to receive money owed as a cheque. HMRC have now reduced my tax instead of paying as a lump sum. They have told me this is because they can only pay it back in one go if it’s for previous years and not just the past year.
Is this correct or can I demand my money back in one go?
Thank you

You have completely misunderstood what's happening.savethebear said:Sorry I probably didn’t explain that well it was for mileage for 23/24
If you are owed tax back for 2023-24 then that comes back to you, it's not dealt with by an adjustment to your tax code.
Separately HMRC may assume you will make a similar claim for 2024-25 and make a tax code change to allow relief on a provisional basis for 2024-25. That has nothing to do with any refund due for 2023-24.0
