Wins that aren't wins

Express&Star is my local paper. I entered to win a free subscription to their 'plus' site. More articles available and no ads. I won! I registered and entered the code, and the price comes up as free, but you can't use it unless you fill in all your back details and then have to remember to cancel the auto-renewal. I didn't bother. So you've "won" a bog standard free trial! 

I wonder how many other people have "won"? My guess would be everyone who entered!

I didn't win but I was a runner-up apparently.. I've deleted the email now but I think the prize was only 25% off a subscription

I had the same email it was 25% off. Mine also deleted.
