Options
When you claim your SP and have savings in your bank account and have claimed benefits in the past do you have to pay back the money to the DWP that you received when you were on benefits ?

No you don't (assuming of course that you were entitled to those benefits at the time)

But keep an eye out for what's announced in the budget next month.

You may have to repay income related benefits if your state pension is backdated for any reason.  But if you are receiving it in real time (i.e. it's due today so it starts today) then you just need to report it in case any of your benefits are income related.

Just to clarify, you have savings now that you did not have in the past?
Or, you had savings when claiming means-tested benefits but did not declare those savings?

I have more savings now than i did  have in the past but i also had savings when claiming benefits but they were  less than 4k which AFAIK the DWP knew about

    ? . ? . ? . ? . ?
  • That’s an interesting concept. Benefits repaid if you can at a later time afford to.

I think that would be a great idea for Furlough money in particular.

Definitely something the government should consider.

    Thanks for proposing it.
