Back in the 1960s/70s my father used to get gifts from suppliers. I still have the small screwdriver sets and the thermometer all stamped with the suppliers name, phone no. and line of business. Very common in those days
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Marketing novelties are still very common.  There are some loosely worded rules about the gift being of "nominal" value and of "no personal gain" (or some such).  The same loosely worded limits on value also apply to refreshments.  There may be someone that knows whether there are actual limits that have been firmly established.

In essence, a "sample" or a token marketing item, or basic refreshments (coffee in the office or as appropriate during genuine work activity) is all permitted.  A worthwhile gift, so a DVD player or a car or a holiday, or substantial entertainment (box at Chelsea FC) would be treated differently.

I think it is sometimes unclear which rules are imposed by HMRC / Government and which rules are company / employer own rules (quite possibly deliberately by companies).
  • I’ve spent most of my working life in the public sector and every employer has had a policy and register similar to the attached. I must have done the training twenty times. Plus there are declarations of interest to complete. I’ve just completed three of those for different roles.

The registers make interesting reading, I’ve seen a planning officer have to declare a Scotch egg! (Applicant genuinely proud of his product). And a couple of times a manager has allowed a member of staff to accept ‘apology’ flowers. I’ve had to pull up a couple of junior staff for accepting alcohol.

If a client gave you a car as a gift I reckon the police would get involved and deem that a bribe
