Concerns about newspaper competition sign up terms

I'm worried about the recent trend of online newspapers requiring users to either accept cookies or pay a subscription fee (like £1.99/month for The Sun and Mirror) to participate in their competitions. I'm hesitant to agree to these terms. Could you explain the potential consequences? Specifically:

  1. Will accepting cookies lead to my computer being inundated with advertising pop-ups?
  2. Is there a risk of my personal information being shared with numerous third-party vendors?
  3. What exactly am I agreeing to when I accept these terms?

I'd appreciate a clear explanation of the implications of accepting these conditions. Thank you.

Its no different to accepting cookies on any website you use, when you get the option to accept cookies there should be a button to click to see what you are accepting if you click the button.

  • Cookies won't create more adverts for you, but they will personalise the adverts. So if you go searching for a new sofa, then the ads you see on other websites that use cookies may be for new sofas.

My solution is to use a separate 'private browsing'/'incognito mode' browser session for any site that requires acceptance of cookies and then I immediately close the whole session as soon as I've finished so the cookies are wiped.
