So, ended up with a Carrera Gryphon, which I know is just above entry level, but it's Ali, and pretty light, and in good physical order. And it was cheap, so not t'end of t'world if stolen.
Giving it a fettle, and I don't like the thumb shifters as both the ups and downs are thumb push - which is ok - but the issue is that they feel set very physically close together, so not very ergonomic (may improve if I rotate them). Also, they are very plasticky.
So, are the index spacings the same betwixt Shimano and SRAM - if I fit Shimano triggers like on my Trek, will it be ok?

Seemingly not a problem - it was the triggers being poorly positioned, with the brake lever partly in the way so too close.
And then the RH brake controlled the rear wheel...0
