Can I claim extra state pension?

I wonder if I can claim extra state pension. 40 years ago I was self employed and because of financial difficulties fell into arrears with my NI contributions. They were happy for me to pay it back weekly, which I did. 
Recently, clearing out old paperwork, I found the payment card. Looking at it, found that the wrong NI number was on the card. It seems I was paying money to the wrong person i.e., not me. I should have been more vigilant but it was they who wrote the card out. Any advice or ideas would be welcomed.

Have you checked your on line tax account to see what gaps you have in your record ?

When do you / did you reach state retirement age ?

How many full years do you have 2015-16 and earlier, how many 2016-17 and later ?

How much are you / will you be receiving each week ?

Answering those points will give a better idea of if it is worth pursuing.

Are you above state pension age now ?
If so, how much pension are you getting and did you reach state pension age before or after 6th April 2016 ?
If not, what does your state pension forecast say
