It can be a very expensive and time consuming hobby but well worthwhile. I have been doing mine for 4 years so if you need any help just ask through PM. Who do you think you are is my favourite programme. If you can get a cheap copy of the book from the first series that will help you.
Some great websites to help you:
Best place to start and enter what information you already have: www.genesreunited.co.uk
Do the free trial - it has the best records of any online resource (but make sure you cancel before the end of the 14 day period otherwise they take the money off the card you have to enter): http://www.ancestry.co.uk/
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
Free birth marriage and death record search: http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Index of old occupations: http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/index.html
Sign up to mailing lists of the surnames or areas you are searching in: http://www.rootsweb.com/
General register office - to order certificates: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I would recommend the software package Family Tree Maker, mine was a gift from my mum and cost about £30/40 last year
Good luck and enjoy it:DNot been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/1550 -
Some Scottish census returns are free to view on here.http://www.freecen.org.uk/ Familysearch.org has the 1881 census free to view. It can be helpful to join sites like RootsChat.com ( free) there are people on there who will help you.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0

Just came across a programme on BBC Radio Scotland called Digging Up Your Roots. Sundays 11.05 to 12.00. Focused on scotland but info on Ireland, Austrialia, Canada too, as well as talking about records inc shipping. Next week the focus is on military stuff. Not sure if you can listen again via the BBC website? I listened via digital tv, ch 930 on Virgin. hths0

I second this - RootsChat is a great site, full of friendly people willing to give advice and do look-ups for you - and it's FREE.
Have a look at the Beginners Board and the Scotland section and ask for any help you need.0
