Poll started 10 September 2024
The start of the new term comes with the scramble to ensure your child's school uniform fits and matches their school's uniform policy. This can be an expensive exercise, and this week we want to know just how expensive it is right now. How much did you spend on school uniform for your child this summer?

Our local charity shop offers a uniform library where you can borrow 6 items for free, and other items are 10p each. Although we do pick up occasional things (mostly unbranded white t-shirts and polo shirts) new, we get most of the uniform via the uniform library, and donate back everything that's been outgrown. I think there should be more places offering something similar!0

You appear to think kids go to school bare-footed. Given the strict requirements of schools these days, shoes definitely qualify as an (expensive) item of uniform. But you haven't included them in the poll.0

Its my sons in his last year at secondary school. All the other years hes had to wear an aweful blazer (cold in winter and hot in summer). Year 11 kids get to wear a V necked black jumper (so cheap and can be bought anywhere, it looks so much smarter). The only issue I have with this is as of January, the school want the Year 11's to buy their any colour hoodie from school at a cost of around £40, to show they are leaving and never to be worn again (not great from the enviroment point of view or cost). I wish the kids could wear the black V neck jumpers from year 9/10 to at least get some use out of them, plus this is when they all seem to have a growth spurt! Schools should NOT be able to benefit from any money made out of school uniform. School uniform needs to be simplified.

My son only needed a few new shirts this time so pretty cheap for now. As a yr11 student I'm only expecting to buy a new pair of shoes around Christmas time. Suits for 6th form already sorted as hand me downs from his older brother.
Our school does allow black leather trainers to be worn instead of formal shoes, but I don't think this saves parents any money as sounds as though lots of children have some fancy Nike trainers costing circa £160!!
