what veg do you like with....

certain meals? Or is that just me? We always have brussel sprouts with roasts of any kind, always have carrots with halibut or peas if we are having haddock. I like green beans with pork chops. I don't think about this I just automatically do this and I suppose it must be what my mum did and it has blueprinted itself into me. Am I the only one who does this? I seem to have infected DH with it now too. Although he does occasionally make "errors". In my family cauliflower cheese was a supper dish maybe Sunday night when still stuffed from Sunday lunch while in DHs it is a side dish often with roast beef. His mum always serves chappit neeps with roast beef or roast chicken but we would only really do this with haggis as a rule. We might have more than one veg per meal but there is usually one "staple" and then whatever takes our fancy.

Am I alone and just a freak or do you have similar "rules"?

Um, I usually just bung in whatever I have :)

I do think some veg goes better with certain things (e.g. brussels sprouts, would definitely not have them with fish _pale_) but I don't really put that much thought into it :)

  • No I didn't think I did but it just occurred to me that I did have "rules" I just didn't have to think twice about. I think I am spending too much time on my own, I am cleaning our new kitchen while DH is away over Xmas and NY and so these things keep popping into my head. I am indeed obviously a freak.

I have mixed frozen veg with everything - we never use up fresh veg so this is the best for us!

No hard and fast rules as such, but if I was having a dish with gravy, I would be more likely to have turnip, sprouts, or carrots. Brocolli and sweetcorn I would not have with gravy, more with a dry fish or chicken dish or something with a white sauce. Peas are more versatile. Cauliflower and cheese sauce definitely goes as an accompaniment to roast beef here!

Sausages have to have potato and swede mash and either peas or carrots on the side.

Peas and carrots with everything. Broccoli and/or cauliflower with gravy.
  • Mashed carrot and turnip with Veggie toad in the hole - can't beat it!

  • Broccoli with almost everything... peas only with gravy, or a fish pie. Carrots versatile, and I like green beans with fish... this is making me hungry :)

Whatever I have in, which equates to 'whatever is in season and is cheap' :D No hard and fast rules in the apple_mint household ... except for the 'must have brussel sprouts' for Christmas dinner.
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D
