Do banks tell HMRC about interest earned?

I’m retired and pay basic tax on my occupational pension . I have saved my 130k lump sum in a couple of higher interest banks and also have 2 ISAs.Both banks have my NI number and have paid me interest. Taxman hasn’t been in touch. About this yet . Will they contact me or do I contact them with my interest statements. Don’t want to accumulate a big tax bill

Interest for non ISA savings accounts, is reported to HMRC by the savings providers, usually annually in May/June/July time.
If you do not fill in a self assessment tax return, then your tax for the previous tax year will be calculated automatically around this time of year. If you have paid too much or too little tax you will be sent details of the calculation ( P800)
You should only fill in a tax form if you need to for other reasons, OR if your savings interest exceeds £10K.
Any interest earned in an ISA is ignored for tax purposes.

Banks etc report your interest earned to HMRC (and you) sometime after the financial year end. If tax is owing then your tax code will be adjusted in the next financial year, so there is a lag before payment is taken.
