Hiatal Hernia Surgery?

I'm 55 and I've had IBS for around 30 years. Main symptom are being bunged up all the time.
I found I solved the issues by a big coffee on a morning to get unbunged, followed by a peppermint tea to stop any IBS symptoms.

A couple of years ago I started feeling bloated and full of gas. Eating veg and fibre would make it worse.
Had a few tests and it was found that I have a 2cm sliding hiatus hernia.

That in itself shouldn't be a big issue, but now everything I did to control my IBS worsens the Hernia symptoms.

I've done all I can to control the my Acid Reflux and bloating, including taking PPIs, Gavison Advance, Digestive Enzymes etc....but it's seems to be getting worse...to the point where it's starting to control my life.
I can no longer go out and have a couple of drinks (I'm not a big drinker anyway), or a meal or just have a normal life.

My GP says I'm not a case for NHS surgery so thinking of going private.
Money isn't an issue, but more concerned about having the Op at my age, changes of it not working, recovery time etc.

Just looking for opinions, especially from anyone who has had the Op.

Thanks.

We’re not allowed to give medical advice on here so if you’re not careful, this thread is likely to be deleted.
However, I think my first question would be to your GP to clarify why they think you’re not a candidate on the NHS?
Cut backs and restrictions, or another strictly medical reason?
You could also look at the NICE guidance and see what that has to say.

Option B, go for a no strings private consultation and ask your questions there.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • The hiatus hernia will not affect your IBS but how you manage the hernia problems could worsen the hernia symptoms e.g. peppermint tea.  You may want to consult a dietician to work out what you can and should not eat in order to manage both problems.
