Have a broken appliance you need to replace?

Obviously if you know what is wrong, try eBay for spares rather than buy a new one. But sometimes the prices of spares are astonishing for spares.

So if you can’t repair it, and it is a good brand item check eBay for ‘sold’ prices of parts for your appliance. If there is a good market for them, consider dissembling the machine and selling the functional parts. There will be Youtube videos to show you how to do repairs - you just need the dissembling segment.

EBay is likely the best place to sell your parts. Slightly undercut the prices including P&P that is being charged by other sellers so that your sells first.

It can seriously help soften the blow of buying the replacement.

I have done this several times, the most successful being 15 year old top of the range Vax carpet shampooer that was working but with some minor faults which I couldn’t fix. To have sold it for spares and repair may have got me £40.  I broke it up for parts and over 6 months got back about £185. For example a simple dirty water tank cap fetched £12. The tank fetched £25. Brush motor, brush bar, handle housings etc. It was eye opening what bits sold.

Clearly it won’t work for every appliance but it is worth checking.

Dishwasher baskets, fridge shelves and trays, TV stands and remotes, vacuum cleaner tools and tubes, switches, handles, motors, clips etc there are many parts that can be sold if you are scrapping something that isn’t working. Dissambly is not always needed. External and plastic parts that are prone to being knocked and breaking or cracking such as casings. Sometimes even an old working item is worth more as parts than whole. Just take 5 mins to check the parts market before sending anything to landfill.

I hope this helps someone.
