HMRC overpaid tax refund issue

Options
Hello. I have been refunded into my bank account £3207 from my self assessment 23/24 (I’m freelance, paid PAYE normally but had 2 months working overseas last year hence the need to file a self assessment).
I have now just received a cheque from HMRC for £3176 from my PAYE assessment.
Does this sound like an error from HMRC? I’ll have to wait till Monday to contact them but I’m worried I’ve made a mistake somewhere along the way now.

Yes, it’s comes up with the amount sent in the cheque
  • It's an error from them or you.  You should only one system calculate your overall liability, PAYE or Self Assessment.

Dei you register correctly for Self Assessment or just file a return using existing Self Assessment account without notifying HMRC you should be in Self Assessment for 2023-24?

Either way Self Assessment always trumps PAYE so keep the £3,207 (assuming your return was correct) and return the £3,176.

Ah ok. I didn’t notify them.
I filed a self assessment 21/22 for child benefit purposes. I didn’t for 22/23 as I hadn’t went over the threshold.
Does that then mean I had to notify them again for 23/24 before I filed my self assessment form?
