Regarding transferring the child benefit into your name, if the CB is currently paid to your partner / spouse who also works and paid NI anyway, you can have the Child Benefit part of their "double NI" earnings transferrred to you retrospectively. If you fill in this form every few years you don't need to switch the CB over.

You can usually only go back one tax year, but I asked for the previous 5 years to be transferred over to my wife a few years ago and they obliged without issue.

    Form / Info here.

Just looking into this - did you give any justification for doing it late to get more than one year? - And was it via one of the forms post/print or was it online? Cheers!
It was a few years ago so I don't think you could do it online as such, I think I filled it in online and then e-mailed the completed PDF to the advisor who responded to my original query and pointed me in the direction of the correct form.

IIRC, I believe I simply stated that we were unaware of the opportunuity to do this previously hence why we didn't apply in earlier years. They also asked for proof we were living together so I sent a scan of our council tax demand which seemed to be acceptable and explained that I could provide them for the previous years if necessary, but the didn't request anything further and just added the additional years on to her record.

We were going to keep repeating this every few years, but since then she has gone back to part time work so earns enought to qualify anyway.

The reason we didn't "switch" the CS to her was because there was apparently no way to do so. The only option at the time was for me to cancel my entitlement, wait for the system to show this, and then for her to completely re-apply from scratch, during which period it may not have been paid, so the other way was just easier. Not sure if that is still the case now though.
