Top up payments go missing

I made additional voluntary payments on 7 June and 11 weeks later had heard nothing.  Pensions Department told me there was no trace of additional payment, and advised me to contact HMRC, who said the same but eventually said they had found the money "floating between banks" as they put it.  For the avoidance of doubt, the money just went from my bank account in an utterly straightforward way back in early June, and the reference number I gave was the correct one.  Has anyone else had their money "float" in this way?  It seems a little strange.
