Got a coat for Xmas... now damaged.

My OH got me an Adidas coat for Xmas from JJB Sports.
The first time I wore it one of the poppers came adrift and broke
As the coat cost about £60 you would expect better

Now the problem...
She hasnt got the reciept :o
The tags have been thrown away in the wrapping paper :o
She paid by cash so no CC transaction either :o
She went to the store and basically they said, not our problem.
No proof of purchase, Im stuck with a faulty coat

Surely if they sell the exact same coat would a be a problem to exchange it
All they have to do is then send it back to their supplier as damaged

I have come up with a solution maybe a bit dis-honest...
I go and buy another...on my CC
And then next day return the damaged one...
And say I dont want it replaced if it breaks that easily, and request a refund....

But should I really have to go through this hastle

She really needs to find the receipt, or speak to Adidas directly?
    Gone ... or have I?

You dont need a receipt as long as you can provide other form of proof of purchase, credit card statement even a witness.

Q: Do I need a receipt to get a refund?
Answer: Basically, the answer is no but you will need another proof of purchase. This could be a bank statement indicating the purchase, credit card counterfoil or even a witness who saw you make the purchase. A receipt however is obviously the best proof of purchase you can get so look after it until you are sure that the goods are okay.

That is the problem, the OP has no proof of purchase as they paid by cash.

I doubt that a witness would have much persuasive power. Anyone can take a mate back in with them to say they were there. For a witness to have any weight, you would be looking at them swearing under oath that they were present at the time of purchase.

Oh well had to go this route in the end...
Bought a new one this morning and
I had a reciept for the broken one all of a sudden

So went back and got a refund as the coat I purchased in the morning had
    developed a fault :o

Erm, hang on, doesn't this still leave you £60 out of pocket?

no, because he paid £60 for it
    then bought another for £60
took the damaged one back and got a £60 refund so

    60 + 60 - 60 = 60 :D
