Wasnt microsoft selling it directly themselves for £30? (office)
  • Great price, BUT I had Office 2007, and it is a terrible upgrade / replacement for Office 2003 ! (A bit like Vista replacing XP, but that's another story !).

First off, 2007 has ditched DOC & XLS extensions, although you can set it to revert back to these. However it always says 'compatibility mode in the application window, which is a little annoying.

Second, the new Ribbon menu structure is a NAFF idea, and a real pain in the butt (in this politically correct world, am I allowed to say butt ? :rotfl: )

Thirdly, it is significantly slower than 2003, so unless you have a high powered machine, don't waste your money.

Needless to say, I sold mine on eBay to some unsuspecting soul ! (I did feel guilty....well a little !)

Apart from that, it's fine :D

So ditching the proprietry closed DOC/XLS format and moving to a open XML format is a bad thing? It's not, now documents are more likely to be readable with the correct formatting in any comparable application (ie open office) rather than .doc where occasionally they get the formatting wrecked opening in them in any other package

Your opinion, I personally found it hard to get used to, but better once you get used to it. it's more obvious but there was some head scratching at first.
Thirdly, it is significantly slower than 2003, so unless you have a high powered machine, don't waste your money.

Not noticed any real difference other than it is a lot slower if you don't have all your drives connected on opening or saving a file, but that's a known issue, if you have drives online it's faster then the old version.

Technically by not being a student you forfeit the licence so you may as well use a p2p copy. If MS find out they will ask you to pay the difference between the cost you paid and the full retail cost or may take you to court as a pirate. You've broken the licence so have no right to use the software.

Will it happen? probably not, but best to understand the implications before you buy this.

Open Office is free. You can save things in .doc format. It looks just like the full price brands. It works on all operating systems and it works very well too!

You only have to have a child at school to satisfy the licence requirements.

The general consensus on the web is the new features in outlook, onenote etc are significantly better than Office 2003.
Service Pack 1 for office 2007 has been released in December - free to download. Reports say this speeds Office up
The ribbon does take some getting used to, but I do think its better as its context sensitive (ie offers features relevant to what you are doing)

My biggest gripe with office is powerpoint, which is totally not backwards compatible, even more frustratingly the powerpoint viewer that ships with office 2007 is not compatible with office 2007, and therefore when you save for powerpoint viewer it downgrades the save to old version, sounds fine until all your animations are totally messed up - looks really good when trying to deliver a professional presentation NOT
Having said that it may have been fixed in service pack 1 - I didn't know it had been released so will have to check that I have it installed now.

Would obviously second the link to ultimatesteal far better value for money, if you are a genuine academic.
