They can only act on DVLA’s info first of all, but if Clouds88 has said that her husband cannot pay, they may be told to say that liability falls on her, as their best hope of recovering the money. They would end up with token payments from him if she were not willing or able to advance the amounts, presumably.

All of the fuel stations involved should know that she is innocent - they got the plate from CCTV, so surely could also have watched enough of the footage to see that it was clearly a Mr rather than a Ms (whose details DVLA gave them) that filled the car and didn’t pay.

If your husband is having a relapse, I would not let him drive the car. It will be a lot more serious if he incurs driving penalties/has an accident, and at that point he might not be so willing to admit the truth.

Totally agree. If he is 'relapsing'- drugs? Alcohol? Mental health? And lacks sufficient attention to pay for fuel then he should NOT be driving. Accident waiting to happen.

I have set up a plan to pay for the first company who have visited my old address as I don’t need any more stress than I currently have.

the other three (one happened the other day before I even knew about this 😩) now will have my correct details as I have updated VC5 and I will tell them it wasn’t me when they contact me and go from there.

re the car, I was sending him money to pay for the fuel and he was using it gambling/drugs obviously I wasn’t aware of this. Now he has limited use of the car yes and he will not be refuelling it ever, I don’t think he would even try now he knows this has come back on me although his ignorance in this is questionable as he knows it is ‘my’ car what did he think would
    Happen?

I am not sure when/if police get involved as this has now happened recently at 4 garages in the same area, albeit all different garages but if he gets arrested/criminal record then it will hopefully be more of a wake up call.

and yes all the CCTV that they use to get the reg will show it was him, on his own who filled up the car he is 6 foot with short hair, can definitely be identified as a man verses petite me with long hair 🤣

Back in my early 20`s, I worked for shell, we were tasked once to design a device to stop drive offs from Garages, as in the late 80`s it was quite a big problem, as it still appears to be today.

One girl produced plans for this fantastic device, which may actually have worked, but the cost was enormous, to install it in every shell garage nationwide would have cost shell 300 times more than the losses they were suffering at the time from drive offs lol.

As for the Police, they don`t usually bother with such things, they prefer the matter to be settled between the garage and the perpetrator, if they are known, as in this case.

Getting police involved actually reduces the chances of getting the money back, as courts have to decide fines on affordability grounds etc, were as a private deal between the two parties is more likely to succeed.
