Does anyone work at either Boots or Superdrug? As most makeup counters don't offer samples can I take a little pot say contact lens size and fill it with the sample, so I can try the foundation on at home to see how it wears etc so I'm not wasting £££ on something I liked in store but get home put in on and find it's not for me or doesn't live up to expectations.

they should be able to give you a small sample or apply some for you so you can see how it looks in a different light.  I doubt they will allow you to fill even a tiddly pot with anything much due to possibilities of contamination to the product you take away.
